At Avanguardia Antiquaria, we invite you to embark on a journey through the captivating world of postwar design in Italy. The aftermath of World War II ushered in a transformative era in Italian design that continues to influence and inspire vintage furniture enthusiasts worldwide. Our carefully curated collection pays homage to this remarkable period, offering a glimpse into the creative and innovative spirit that defined postwar design in Italy.

The postwar period was a time of rebirth and renewal for Italy, and the design world was no exception. It marked a departure from the ornate and opulent styles of the past, giving way to a fresh, minimalist aesthetic that emphasized functionality and affordability. Italian designers played a pivotal role in this movement, championing the idea of merging art and industry.

Key figures like Gio Ponti and Achille Castiglioni spearheaded the transformation of Italian design. Their work showcased a blend of form and function that emphasized practicality, giving birth to the modern Italian design industry. In our collection, you’ll find iconic pieces like the “Arco Lamp” by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, and the “Superleggera Chair” by Gio Ponti, which exemplify the marriage of form and function that characterized the era.

The materials used during this period, including plastic, steel, and glass, reflect a shift towards lightweight, functional, and minimalist aesthetics. Our vintage Italian furniture collection embodies the principles of simplicity and utility that defined postwar design in Italy.

When you choose a piece from our collection, you’re not just acquiring furniture; you’re owning a piece of history. It’s a tribute to Italy’s resilience and its ability to reinvent itself, creating a legacy of design that remains as fresh and relevant today as it was in the postwar era.

Visit Avanguardia Antiquaria to explore the enduring charm of postwar design in Italy, where classic design elements meet the innovative spirit of a transformative period in Italy’s design history.

Avanguardia Antiquaria is a place of research throughout time: a Gallery and exhibition space for art, antiques and design from the XX century, and a laboratory for the conservation and restoration of antiques cabinets, paintings, ceramics and gold-plating.

The dialogue between the narration of the past and present-day artistic research is the common theme that has given life to the oxymoron “Avanguardia Antiquaria”: the idea is to have objects born in different places and time live together in the same location.

“There are no beautiful thoughts without beautiful shake, and vice versa.”
(G. Flaubert)
